Transparency Tutorial (GIMP)Welcome to the Transparency Guide for the GIMP! Let's get started.
Step 1 - Open PictureThe first step in transparatizing (a real word, zomg) your picture is to open it. Yes, really. Go to the top of the page, click on "File-->Open" and choose your picture.Great! I'm going to choose this sprite, and zoom in like so.
Step 2 - Add Alpha LayerNext, we add the alpha layer. It should be under "Layers". Right click the background, and choose "Add Alpha Channel". This is the GIMP's way of adding a transparent layer under your image.![]() Step 3 - Trim PictureThe next step is to remove all the white parts that are not part of the picture. To do this, select the Magic Wand Tool. Now click on the white area of the picture. It should be surrounded by a line of "marching ants". Now press Ctrl+k. The white should disappear, and a checkerboard-background should show up instead. Now click on the rest of the white, until it's all gone. You should end up with this. Save as .png and you're done! ![]() |
